POLLlNATION PROCESS WITH TABLET

Hi everyone!
We are Edurne Lafuente, Joan Domènech and Marta Jaumot. You might know us from the other projects that we have done in the past such as the one about Roman Civilization. Now we are going to present you another activity which involves using the tablet in class with your students.
As we have said before, tablets are a great tool to engage students in the learning process. Of course, the activity discussed here can also be used with a different topic.
The activity that we have designed is suitable for all ages in primary, as long as you adapt the topic and aims to the age group that you are working with.

Target audience:

The activity created is intended for fourth grade students (4th). We have introduced different concepts related to the pollination process. After learning about the pollination process, related vocabulary and concepts, students will be asked to create a comic strip, which will be done at the end of the unit to serve as a review. They will have two hours a week designated to this exercise. Each student will have a folder containing the contents learnt in the unit, which they can look back on while making the comic strip.

Aims:
  • To consolidate and revise knowledge that we have been learning in previous sessions and to prepare for the Pollination process exam.
  • To apply the vocabulary which we have learnt in the unit.
  • To comprehend the Pollination process.
  • To incorporate tablet use in the review of concepts learnt in class.

Competencies:
  • Linguistic and audiovisual: expanding vocabulary and use of ICT.
  • Digital management of information: students will use their tablets to carry out the  activity.
  • Knowledge and interaction with the outside world: acquiring natural science concepts.
  • Social and civic: we will divide the class in 3 groups of 4 (relatively small groups) to encourage teamwork and communication. Each student will be given a role within their group.

Classroom Management:

This activity will require the teacher to divide their students in groups of 4 (preferably sitting in tables of 4 as well). Students on each table will have a different role that they must take on during the realization of the task:
  • Speakers are only allowed to communicate with other speakers. When in doubt, they can ask the teacher.
  • Coordinators are responsible for reiterating the instructions of the activity, just in case one of their partners has failed to understand or has forgotten the original objectives.
  • Supervisors make sure that all the members of the team work together in an appropriate and constructive manner.
  • Environment-ers are responsible for controlling the group´s volume and material during the development of the activity (should this be necessary).
All members of the group must participate in the realization of the comic. They should communicate with each other in English and respect the roles of the group.

Vocabulary:
Related to the Pollination process, for example:
  • Flowers and plants
  • Insects
  • Pollen grains
  • Parts of the flower (female and male part)
  • Reproduce
  • Pollination process

Activities:
First of all, the teacher will introduce the topic to the students using the following video: “Parts of a flower and Pollination” (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djPVgip_bdU) in their Natural Science class. Then, using the unit folder, the teacher will explain the pollination process and the different parts of the flower. Finally, students will make their comic strips using the tablet explaining the pollination process. To make a comic, student could take screenshots of the different steps in this process, and add text/dialogue using the options given in the application.

  1. Upload a screenshot/image from your gallery.
  2. Format the picture to your liking.
  3. Add onomatopoeia or speech bubbles to bring your image to life.
  4. Repeat the above steps until you have your comic strip!
