Using Genially in the Science class

The students in the 3rd Key Stage have studied the invertebrate animals. As a global revision, the teacher proposes to create a digital compilation of interactive pictures containing information about these animals.
The students will use the website Genially, that offers a wide range of templates to create interactive material. In this occasion, each group of students will create an interactive picture of the type of animal chosen.

DIGITALLY INTERACTING WITH THE INVERTEBRATES
Learning Outcome
I can create an interactive picture about an invertebrate animal.
Objectives
·         To create a digital interactive picture.
·         To synthesize information.
·         To communicate a content using both visuals and text.
·         To work cooperatively.
Competences
·         Autonomy and initiative competence.
·         Linguistic and audiovisual communicative competence.
·         Treatment of information competence.
Material
Internet connection, computer, projector, IWB
Description of the activity
First of all, we will split the class into cooperative groups. Each group will choose a kind of invertebrate (already studied), trying that any group repeats the same invertebrate. Once we have decided each topic, the students can start working.
Taking into consideration that they have already studied, they can use their own notes to create the content. However, they can search extra information or curiosities as well.
At the end of the project, every group will show its interactive picture to the rest of the group. If possible, we will use the Interactive Whiteboard.
Classroom management
Taking into consideration that this activity is presented as a revision, students will directly work into cooperative groups.
Assessment
One the one hand, every group will assess their own interactive picture. Moreover, they will present to the teacher a short list with their strengths and their weaknesses.
On the other hand, the teacher will assess the ability to synthesize the information and to visually communicate it. Furthermore, it will value if the group has added links to websites, videos... However, the teacher will take into consideration the assessment done by the groups.

Finally, regarding differentiation, cooperative learning is a powerful tool for inclusion and it fosters the participation of all the members. However, a good planning and structure of cooperative learning is needed. Students need to be taught how to work cooperatively.
